The Gates of Horn and Ivory

Two Gates the silent House of Sleep adorn; Of polish'd Iv'ry this, that of transparent Horn:
True Visions thro' transparent Horn arise; Thro' polish'd Iv'ry pass deluding Lies.

Hi. Sorry my presence is so sporadic, I think that will improve since I changed my setting so that I am to be sent an email notification whenever there is a post. The only thing is that it appears to be really sporadic. Like I got notification of Russian spam, but nothing about Jinnigan posting or Edo. So that is annoying. It may be that I need to renew the license for this board in order to fix those things, I will ask Chris about that. It is possible I can do that next month so hopefully my attendance here will improve if I actually get the notifications. :sweatdrop:

Also, I am really saddened these days due to my dear cat, Louis-Philippe, has been diagnosed with lymphoma just last week. Yesterday I gave him his first dose of chemo. And it is weird because that is cytotoxic so I need to wear gloves to handle it and dispose of it properly, including the question of what sink should I use to wash his food bowls which may be contaminated with a chemotherapeutic agent. But we (me and husband and our other cat who is the brother to L-P) are all coping and hoping the medication helps which would be very nice.

    Yup. Otherwise, things are alright.

Unfortunately it's just the nature of the notification system, rather than anything wrong with the software (we are outdated now, yes, but that won't impact the notifications). Technically you should receive an email each time a response is made to a thread you're subscribed to; however, what tends to happen is you'll get a single notification email when a response is made and no follow-ups until you've read the thread again, followed by another email with the next response, and so on. Just one notification at a time. It's a bit of a shoddy way of doing it, but it's done so that your inbox doesn't get flooded with "[user] has responded to thread [title]" emails. I would suggest perhaps setting up a label in Gmail just for the notification emails, and then applying a filter to them so they're sent to a section of Gmail that you can visibly see change when a new email is sent. You can do this by:
    1. Open one of the notification emails
    2. Under the More pulldown select the command: Filter messages like these
    3. You will then see the form open up with the FROM box filled in.
    4. Google with then show you the messages that the filter has found.
    5. Click create filter with this search.
    6. You can now specify if you want to:
      • Skip the Inbox (Archive it)
      • Apply the label:
      • Also apply filter to x matching conversations.
    7. Click create the filter.
That way, when you check your emails and you see the "Gates" filter (or whatever you decide to name it) has a number beside it, you know for sure you have a notification. All you have to do then is check the notification and you should be good to receive an email the next time a response is made to the subscribed thread. It's just an idea, but one I thought I'd throw out there :).

Sorry to hear that, we've got a little one with feline leukemia who needs special attention, as well. It's not fun, but you do what you can to make sure they're happy and as healthy as possible. Hopefully Louis-Philippe comes through it quickly and the medication makes him better again!

That's good to hear, I try to tell myself the same thing most days :)

Hi Chris, thank you so much for the tip on what to do with gmail, I am going to do that, thank you.

I am sorry to hear your kitty is ill too. It is disheartening. I just gave Louie his 2nd dose of chemo. He is so good too, it take a bit for him to eat his medicine but he seems to understand. But he is quite thin and I am brokenhearted over it. But maybe he will respond to the chemo.

I'm sorry that both of you have sick kitties. Our semi feral baby has an eye injury due to my sister's asshole cat, we're gonna take her in as soon as we can trap her, but she doesn't like to go in the trap so it's been an effort to get her in. :( and we're fostering a feral kitten, mom has been trapping the ferals and strays to keep them from breeding again, but it's a process and dh was the one to discover the kitten in the trap, which meant we couldn't take it to the pound. Sigh. We're tapped out on resources so we can't socialize him ourselves, so he s locked in a room until we can trap him again too and take him to a pound where he'll get the care and socialization he needs. Unfortunately that means lying and saying we found him at Gramma's, but if it gets him his forever home I'm willing to take him all the way to the East Bay. And anyways we go out there a lot, so it's not like an extra trip just for him. Ugh. Too many cat problems, not enough solutions.

Hi Entervixen and Edo! My cat Louie is likely responding to the chemo and/or steroids. He is eating more and is much more lively. We took him to an oncologist who is tweaking his meds and says they actually take up to 12 weeks to start working. Sadly he'll be on meds the rest of his life. But overall I am happy with his progress and enjoying quality time with him and I think he will be with us for a time yet. :)

I hope you get the kitten issue figured out Vixen, and also thank you for taking care of ferals, that is really wonderful of you and your family.
