Chris, can you explain this?

The Gates of Horn and Ivory

Two Gates the silent House of Sleep adorn; Of polish'd Iv'ry this, that of transparent Horn:
True Visions thro' transparent Horn arise; Thro' polish'd Iv'ry pass deluding Lies.

Riddle me this. A png file, 23kb in size (23,610 bytes) is not suitable for avatar because it's bigger than 50kb.

I've attempted to set a .png as avatar more than once, every time with completely different files and filesize below 25kb. It is universally rejected by the board software for being too large >50kb. Dimensions were 200x200, filesize between 10-25kb. Bit depth at 8bit.

I have no idea why it would reject that. I've gone ahead and upped the maximum filesize, so give it another go and let's see what happens :)

No changes. It also implies that the maximum size is still 50kb and that my png is over this file size. Even though it is not.

This 10kb png I just put there seems to work.
Here is an image which does not work:

Alright, I went back through the permissions once again and the change didn't stick. Can you try one more time?

It works. I wonder just how big the board thinks this is

Unless the limit was under 20kb or something

The original limit was actually set at 52kb, so I've got no idea why it wouldn't go through the first time. One of those weird things, I guess :)
