The Gates of Horn and Ivory

Two Gates the silent House of Sleep adorn; Of polish'd Iv'ry this, that of transparent Horn:
True Visions thro' transparent Horn arise; Thro' polish'd Iv'ry pass deluding Lies.

Rent and bills are again 2 months behind, our bank account is over drafted, I ran out of one of my OTC pain meds, and we're running out of food :/ no money coming this pay period tomorrow, and if Al doesn't get a sale by Sunday none the next either. I'm looking up food banks and trying to apply for food stamps and cash aid, but we're missing documents and I don't know wtf to do anymore.

Ugh, I am really sorry to hear it, I replied too in Dire. Your best bet are state and federal programs, I don't know what else you can do if you are both out of work. Can you work at all?

Not really. I'm starting a patreon for my writing, but that's a long term goal.

Its crowdfunding for artists. So like you say "if you donate I'll do x" whatever x is, and as long as people like you you'll get a dollar or whatever from them a month until they unsubscribe. I'm going to make one for short stories, basically.

Patreon, interesting. Yeah never heard of that. I am glad you got the food stamps! I think there are people in the current admin who would want to deny you that, sadly.

Yeah there are, and that bothers me.

So he didn't get the job, and cash aid hasn't been approved yet so we're waiting on that to pay rent. I just want things to get better. I'm tired of life just throwing every bad possible scenario at me.

*I have read this over and I know it is harsh but maybe you need to consider it. Please read and just think about it because I care for you and your family and your well-being.*

We know that the current admin is not tolerant of persons in poverty. We can vote them out but it likely will not help much due to overpopulation and using up resources. The fact is that things are going to get worse during our lifetimes, especially if you have little or no income. Funds are running out for the programs you likely rely on. You may get help now, but what about in a few years?

You are in CA and one in five persons lives in poverty in your state. You should at least talk to your husband about leaving CA now, while you can. The heat is going to get worse, the fires worse, food will become scarce and there will be water loss due to the weather. People are going to die and it is not far off, in maybe 20 years or less we will start to see massive deaths beginning around the world and actually it is starting now. Here are some facts about the future of CA with respect to population and the economic forecasts:

    CA population projection by year
CA Economic forecasts for 2019 to 2022

I hope you can download those forecasts, if not let me know your county and I can paste the info for you. What they show, in short, is that population is rising and wages are falling.

If you can, get out now to a state with more resources, there are just too many people in CA. I have not personally looked but find a state where there are jobs and where water is plentiful and where there are vocational schools. Support for people at the poverty level is drying up just like the sources of water are. This administration may be reelected in 2020, this is fact and would be a terrible misfortune for those in deep poverty.

I am not sure what your husband is trained for but maybe look into vocational training in other states for electrician, plumbing, mechanic where the cost is not as much as in CA or they have apprenticeships . All those mentioned would be good jobs that would support a family for a lifetime but since you need to somehow live while acquiring skills, CA is not a good place to be.

One last thing I am sorry to say, but the water situation in Mexico City is dire. All they have is underground water and they are using it up like mad. Where are the poor people who cannot get water going to go? They will head north. So not only will you be competing for resources in a state where millions of legal residents are poor, more poor people are coming in the next few years.

If you stay there, idk, maybe look into these following resources and make sure you have applied for every one that you qualify for:

    CA resources to help
    CA Labor info

I know, I agree with all of that. The problem is we have no way out of here right now. For better or worse we're stuck until we can get the money to move. Also we'd be leaving behind the only family we really interact with, and my gramma isn't getting any younger.

I know life here isn't sustainable, though. I got accepted into an online college, to give my writing more pizazz, and sometimes FAFSA helps pay for basic necessities. Loans are gonna suck though because my credit is shot. Al also got accepted for a game programming and design course, that is a way better industry than retail or food service or labor. He is waiting to hear if he got the job he interviewed for today, but if its yes he needs steel toe boots and gas money, and we have neither. I don't know what to do. Our system is so broken its unbelievable, and you're right, it is going to get worse. I just don't know what to do until we can escape.

Search google for "state relocation incentives". There are states that pay you to relocate. Not all are great deals and some are places you might not want to live, like Kansas will give you free land to build on but sadly it is in Kansas. Ohio, Michigan and other states have programs that pay you to move there to work. Some have education requirements so would not work for you. But anyhow you can check it out. Take your Gramma with you.

I don't think game programming and design is a profitable field to go into unless he already has his degree. There are a kazillion people who want to be game programmers and designers. Does he have his computer programming bachelors degree?

Oh I know, that's the thing there, we both signed up for college. It's online, accredited, non-profit, and it has degree programs for both of us, and neither of us want to live like this forever. So School starts monday, I''ll be studying creative writing with a focus in fiction, and he's studying game program and design. Actually one of the studios he wants to work at has been telling him what they personally look for when hiring, which is super cool. They said degrees are good and needed, but small completed projects are what really wow them.

Also I didn't know that was an option regarding moving. I'll start poking around and see what's available.

Are you guys trying to get AAs or BA/BS with this online program? Non-profit does not mean free. What is your debt burden going to be once done? Do you have any credits so far? If so, how are your grades, what is your GPA? What was your HS GPA? I am asking because there are some full-scholarship programs out there that I know about for women going back to college years after HS. Some provide housing assistance and also summer internships. Let me know the above if interested. I am not saying this year, it is something you'd have to apply for.

I'm getting a BA and Al is getting a BS. And no, I'll still end up about 40k in debt, but a non profit caps the cost of tuition and makes books easier to afford. I don't remember my GPA, I know I did well on standardized tests, but undiagnosed mental health problems meant I missed a lot of school, and I wound up getting kicked out after my parents separated and just never went back. No credits so far, unfortunately. Yeah a scholarship would be good, that will help offset things.

Debt wise, the same program Al was looking at at a for profit school would have been 78k. So the 40k we're looking at isn't bad. And if we really want to get ahead, at least one of us needs to be a college graduate.

I hope things are going well. We have been packing to move and that is why I have not replied in so long. I hope to be in a better place to attend to this board in about 2 weeks, once we get to the west coast!
