The Gates of Horn and Ivory

Two Gates the silent House of Sleep adorn; Of polish'd Iv'ry this, that of transparent Horn:
True Visions thro' transparent Horn arise; Thro' polish'd Iv'ry pass deluding Lies.

Thanks :) Just came back from an interview with two managers at a Hyundai dealership thanks to my friend. They took all my information and said as long as I pass a drug test and background check I get the job. So unless they take exception to something weird or someone drugged me while I was sleeping, it looks like I'm gonna have a new job by the end of the week as a lot porter. Basically I get to do busywork and run errands and drive company cars. lol

Thanks. It's kind of rough sometimes like being out on the lot in the sun surrounded by asphalt and steel (I got burned really bad my first day) but other times I get to run errands, get gas, and drive different cars all the time so overall it's not so bad. Only problem so far is when it's time for my 2 days off I don't want my feet to touch the ground.

Since this is basically a blog now, here's a small update. Now that I have a job that pays decent and I'm not living with a crazy girl and her kid I'm starting to do some things to my truck again. To start everything off, I'm getting a set of tires for it on Wednesday and having a guy at work put them on for me Thursday. Two of them are pretty much new, and the other two look a lot better than what I have on it right now... It's $400 for the set which isn't bad, new ones are around $200 each.

After that (This part is more for me to remember than expecting anyone to care :p) I need to put a new gasket and vent tube in the front differential, check the valve cover seals, put a stereo back in it, get light bezels and new clearance lights, a new inner fender for one side that I can't remember at the moment, door seals, take a leaf out of the springs in the front cause the dern thing sits lower (the height I want it to be) in the back... Need to make sure there are no leaks anywhere, check front drive shaft U-joints and all ball joints. Patch a hole in the exhaust system. Errmmm.. That's all I can think of except window tinting and a paint job. Oh, a new hood latch cable and wiper blades. That's more than I thought, some of it is nit picky but still needs to be done since the thing hasn't been regularly driven in a few years.

Edit to add a picture of the truck from yesterday... This is me accidentally bending a car ramp / measuring to see if I can fit larger tires while one tire is higher than the other. I can fit them if everything is level, but if I'm turning sharply while I dunno going over a rock or a small car, then it might rub the fender so I think I'm just going to stay with 33s and lower it a tiny bit like I had planned originally. You probably can't tell by the dirt and crap but this is after I took it through a car wash, which was a minor nightmare. I usually just wash it myself. My tires were touching both the guides for the front end, and I kept swearing something was going to scrape the cab, then when the air dry feature came on it kicked up some crap I had left over from cleaning out the bed... Anyway I'm supposed to go pick up the new tires in a couple hours.

Thanks you thank you... it still has a long way to go before it's back the way I want it. Not drivig it for almost 3 years wasn't good to it but I haven't touched my car since I put the new tires on the truck :)

I work for a Hyundai dealership as a lot porter. Pretty much I move cars around, get gas, pick up customers, run errands and do dealer trades. The pay isn't great but I've done worse for less, its really not a bad job.

Also the day after I got the tires put on I stayed late at work and pressure washed 75% of the truck, lol. Got most of that grimy oak sap and stuff off of it, and a little bit of paint too. That's okay though.

I need a Knives Anonymous class or something. I have two assisted open stilettos on the way from BudK, one with a black pearl grip that I'm sure is fake to replace one that's the same and has disappeared after I left it at a friend's house (trust me in this situation it's easier to just order a replacement and hope the other one turns up too), and the other is a slim rubber grip. Then today at work I was looking at Swiss Army Knives online (slow day, lol) and I decided to order a Victorinox Mountaineer, that one is to replace an old Victorinox Grand Prix which they probably stopped making in the 80s. I've been keeping it put up most of the time since I was probably 10 or 11 and carrying a series of el-cheapo knockoffs so that I'm less likely to break/lose the one that might actually be worth something. That and it doesn't have a corkscrew. But the knockoffs all have friggin fish scalers and wood saws on them, who needs that? The antique has a metal saw/file at least that's useful. I really need a life...

^That's what I ordered, except not from the site hosting the image because they declined my card for no reason so I went somewhere else and promptly ordered it to the wrong zip code, because FTW.

This is the antique because screw it I'm tired and I want to post it:

And the two stilettos that should be here Wednesday... I don't claim these to be great knives (they're relatively cheap) but the black pearl grip one was a good sturdy knife that I carried every day, and I've had good experiences with United Cutlery's fixed blade knives. Together these only cost about $25. I was looking at a burnt bone handle Damascus steel Kissing Crane stiletto that's a decent brand and more expensive, but I don't see the point in getting a $50 (after significant discount) knife that looks like a switchblade but takes two hands to open and doesn't have a pocket clip in the year 2013.. I think when these get here I'm going to have a "family reunion" and dig up all the knives I can find for some pictures. But I'll stop rambling about knives (for now). Crap I need to go to bed, I'm pretty worn out.

Wow Allen you have impressed me. That Swiss Victorinox is sweet, I have looked at that for my hubby but he loves his old one. I like those stilettos, so that is what you call them. Are you allowed to walk around with those? I should get a nice dagger for my purse, you never know, haha!

Haha well those aren't actual switchblades, they are spring assist knives made to look like them which is perfectly legal, although at one point some people who didn't understand the laws on blades or what spring assist actually was tried to have them banned. Technically it's frowned upon to carry around knives larger than 3.5" but I have been carrying 4-4.75" blades for a long time and the police won't really say anything about it as long as you aren't acting stupid with it. I've had them look at the knife and then hand it back to me. Going much bigger than that could get you in some trouble though.

I love those Swiss knives, especially Victorinox. They're a tad bit expensive depending on model / retailer but worth every penny... I picked the Mountaineer because it had everything I was likely to use minus a fine screwdriver, and doesn't have the fish scaler. Wanted the Craftsman, but it was a little wider than what I'd want in my pocket and would need a case. The funny thing is I just broke my knockoff one by trying to open all the tools at once, it bent something and now the scissors are stuck open, lol.

Omg where did that label come from! That must be from the new rollout that they did, XenForo I mean. And the bar here with all the quick formatting tools is looking very sweet, I must say.

On to knives. All I have is a costume dagger, it says it is steel and it's made by some company that makes kitchen knives but it is not sharpened and it stands in a stand that it came with. I have ALWAYS wanted to collect some real knives and even swords. But now they are so expensive. I was looking at this most beautiful blade done by a master sword creator and it was a dark reddish metal, just so beautiful...and it was $13,000. He has some less expensive ones of course, but they are around $3-4k. I have to show it to you.

Oh my God, I love that sword. *dies*

But here is another one I love and it is "only" $1430:

Ok so I need a nice Lady Dagger. Can you help me find one that is legal, but ever so pretty and would look nice in my purse? One of those folding ones like you have, spring release.

Wow those are really nice. I could never ever pay that much for a blade though, I guess my collection is just cheap lol. I'm kind of drooling over the first one you posted... I just keep thinking "I could buy a pretty nice car for that money." The most I ever spent on one was right around $95 including shipping, it was a sgian dubh made in Scotland (this one actually). I had ordered one from a different company and it was bulky and cheaply made but I really liked the design behind it, so I tracked this down. I found a company on the west coast of the US that made them very similar at about half the price I ended up paying, had them send me pictures of one and it looked nothing like the picture on their site, the back side of the handle looked like absolute crap (they were made to either be concealed or openly carried in the sock, with a particular side facing out).

I can certainly keep my eye out for you next time I'm perusing around, what is your price range? I get a lot of my knives from BudK.com. They have a good selection and some pretty nice stuff, you might want to check it out. I try to keep tabs on the promotions they have going on and their closeout section. I thought their "suggested retail" and "our price" was BS, but on other sites I see the same knives at the higher price. Watch out for the $10 specials and such though... Sometimes you'll luck out and get a great knife, other times not so much. I'm debating sending one of mine back, the "black pearl" handle one I got seems to have a slight backwards lean to it when open and the safety is extremely tight. There is a break-in period for spring assist knives of course but it's a little excessive. The other one I had just like it was almost perfect except for a slight defect in one of the grips.

My Swiss knife is going to take a bit longer than expected; one of their employees sent me an email saying they were out of stock on that particular model but they could order it for me, so I told them I'd just wait since I put too much thought into which one I wanted already. But they don't expect it to come in until the 8th and then they still have to engrave it and ship it out to me.

All this talk of "weaponry" is making me think I need another gun. Haha

I agree with you about that $13k sword I gave you the pic to above, it is sweeeeeet. And if I were a multimillionaire maybe I would buy one. Maybe. That "sgian dubh" is very pretty really. I will look at BudK.com and see what I see.

My price range is up to $100. I know that is not alot but what do you think? Well I will look at this place you said. I don't know anything about spring assist knives or how to assess one when I see it, I'll just have to experiment.

Well at least the Swiss knife will arrive eventually, at least you can still get it.

I would not mind a little lady gun. My husband would protest though. But Smokey Haze said she would take me out to the shooting range. Anyhow they have one of those nearby. But again with the husband protest so I am not even going to think about it. Maybe I will talk to him about it. What kind of gun do you want?

Sorry it took me so long, been pretty busy... Those are pretty nice, Kershaw is a good brand. United Cutlery is kind of hit or miss sometimes. Like the last one I got is functionally just fine, but the blade leans to the side a bit. I never spend a bunch of money on a knife unless I really like it though because I'm likely to break them or lose them... I definitely wouldn't carry around that last one though. The one I got is the same knife but smaller version and it's pushing it for a daily carry.

Hm, guns.. Where to start? I guess the main question would be how could anyone in their right mind protest something this cute? I have one of those, it's the only gun I've ever bought literally because I thought it was cute :p (.22 Magnum). I was actually looking at a Taurus 845 last since I don't have a .45 yet... I have a PT 24/7 Pro DS 9mm that I really like, it came before the OSS mentioned in the pic. It's never jammed without operator error and holds 17 rounds. I also had it's predecessor, the 24/7 Pro which had a few kinks to be worked out but the DS and OSS models seem to have fixed all that. People still like to talk bad about Taurus but I've had three of them, still have two (one's a snub nose .38), and I've been very happy with them overall. I recently traded my dad for a pistol grip 12 gauge I've been wanting for a while... I guess other than that I still don't have a "real" rifle (just a .22) and as far as those go I can't decide between the AR-15 or the classic AK-47. The ARs are nice but they're pretty expensive and I like the idea of shooting the larger 7.62 round in the AK vs the 5.56 or .223 in the AR. I've always like the look of them too. Then there's the whole "AR-15 is accurate, AK-47 never jams" thing. Choices, I'm not good at them lol. If I got the AK I could at least have another Russian relic to go with my old service revolver. Actually, I think that's going to be the plan for now.

So I bought one of the mini-Swiss knives at work today with the Hyundai logo on it, and I come home and check the mail for pretty much no reason and... My Mountaineer came two days earlier than I expected it :)

Wow that Mountaineer is sweet looking! I really should think about that for my husband's birthday coming up in October. That little mini-Swiss is great for your keychain!!! I could use one of those.

I love that cute little gun. I just can't have one until I have tried out the shooting range with Smokey though. I won't get the really long knife, but I am seriously thinking about the others.
