The Gates of Horn and Ivory

Two Gates the silent House of Sleep adorn; Of polish'd Iv'ry this, that of transparent Horn:
True Visions thro' transparent Horn arise; Thro' polish'd Iv'ry pass deluding Lies.

Well now we've effectively ran everyone out of this thread, probably a couple pages ago. But it's my thread so you can all suck it! Just kidding I love you guys haha... I should apologize for my delay too, my screwy brain and borderline alcoholism got the best of me for a couple days there lol, but you probably figured (drunk leprechaun day wasn't quite what I expected this year). On a brighter note I got a job during that time.

You make an interesting point on language but even insects can tell the difference between submission and aggressiveness, where do you draw the line? Then again that's what you were asking me to begin with, my line is apparently just a little different. I've seen a bird that will bless you out for no reason, and one that whistles the theme to Andy Griffith, that doesn't mean he has any clue what he just said.

Again with the shelter, spiders make holes, fish live in dead cedar trees and tires under the water, bees build hives. It's all instinct. That's the difference: Human creativity and desire to improve.

And I've never heard of a gorilla that raises cats, that is quite odd I must say.

By the way, my dog is a jackass, sometimes I hate him lol. He just happens to understand more than most people try to teach their dogs (not to say I don't have to tell him a few times, or remind him what he's supposed to be doing). The key was always trying to talk to him like you would a child instead of one-word commands, and using visual cues. They seem to have the intellect of about a two-year old.

Language is defined as the ability to meaningfully structure words. When an animal can say "food" using some signals, that is not language. Language is when you can say "I found food" because then you just structured several languages to make a more complex meaning. That's why language is deemed unique to humans, since other animals can communicate, but they can't combine abstract concepts to form language.

But "candy give me" is pretty close to real language. o_0 Heck, I'll say it IS language.

And the theories about souls and another plance and such... the problem is that you cannot support it with evidence. In the absence of evidence, we can't assert that something is true, so we will take the default stance, which is assuming that something doesn't exist. IMO, your statement about how something about souls is more probable than us just dying and rotting... I'll just say that the theory about souls is as likely to be true as Russel's teapot.

Well anyhow, hmmm. I want to talk about how we are domesticating animals and making them smarter!! We are causing evolution to happen. Do I need to explain about the relationship between the gut and the brain? And as the gut gets smaller, as food is more processed, the brain gets larger. It's an interesting theory and I like to think one could easily extrapolate to animals. So maybe not so long ago Koko would not have been able to talk. But if Koko is spending less time digesting then maybe more time went (developmentally) into allowing her brain to become larger. Nutrition (and nurture) could have played a big part into letting her develop into a gorilla genius. But maybe that is not the case and these types of processes take a million years...

Yeah, man-made evolution can be cool, but sometimes it can cause problems. >_> Genetic engineering gone wrong might create a deadly bacteria.

And about how the brain gets larger as the gut gets smaller... can you link me to some research articles? o_0 That seems interesting.

This is an interesting topic, I hope to return to it when I have enough leisure to think for a while before posting. :)

Oh, wow, really interesting. It seems really intuitive and makes a lot of sense but we never really think about it until someone mentions it to us. o_0

    Thanks Uma. ^^

Yeah well think about what WE are doing to dogs and cats! And horses and all manner of animals! We are feeding them...processed foods. Foods that take a shorter time to span the gut. As we do this and as they breed true they will end up getting smarter and smarter. We breed for smartness, don't we? Like those dogs for the blind and for the disabled, and monkeys for the disabled. Think about it. Processed food. Smaller guts. Bigger brains. And when you read about this in the future I want you to point them to this post and have them call the theory "Uma's Theory". Thank you. *bows*

Domesticated animals do always seem a little smarter... I think partly because they watch what we do. That's an interesting theory though.

I didn't think about how we're feeding processed foods to pets until you mentioned it. o_0

Yeah, I guess we're making animals smarter and smarter...

Maybe it'll be dogs and cats, not computers, that take over the world and kill us all :b

Heh, maybe. But I was thinking, I can totally see the cats in control and the dogs as their minions. :D

No doubt, self-serving beings that they are. Our stray is now pregnant. :\

Uh oh. Is that a cat or a dog stray? Strays should be neutered.

It is a cat. We do not even have a litterbox or food for it, but my room-mate is oddly soft-hearted for it and continues to half-assedly take care of it. :eek:_O

Awwww cats are sweet. But this cat has to have her kittens taken care of when she has them. She should be taken to a foster home. There are people who can raise the kittens and then they give them away. If you can't help the cat don't tell me any more, I am too soft hearted to hear sad animal stories.

Ah cats... they keep getting impregnated at my friend's house. We always just let them have the kittens and keep an eye on them / feed and water the mama and then start giving away the kitties when they're old enough. I think they might be asexual, I have never seen the male.

Hehe, no they are not asexual, there has to be a male, well, if you can catch them and have them neutered that is best but I totally understand, it is not really your responsibility. Good luck with the kittens. ^_^

The female usually belongs to my friend, and usually comes from the last litter of kittens that were there. The male must be pretty damn sneaky. So it's an interesting little life cycle experiment at the least :p
