The Gates of Horn and Ivory

Two Gates the silent House of Sleep adorn; Of polish'd Iv'ry this, that of transparent Horn:
True Visions thro' transparent Horn arise; Thro' polish'd Iv'ry pass deluding Lies.

So, I'm sleepless and having troubling breathing possibly due to acid reflux, and I thought, "Most of us are watching Gotham, or Agents of SHIELD, or the Flash, or Arrow, or all of the above," and, "Most of us have seen Marvel's the Avengers, and at least one of the recent Nolan trilogy of Batman movies," I figured I'd pose this question to us speculative types:

How would the world at large, and how would you specifically, react if superheroes existed?

And, I'm not only speaking of superhumans (or "metahumans") as a whole, or even just vigilantes in ski-masks or hockey masks; I'm talking about honest-to-goodness, costume-wearing, colorful characters with symbols or letters on their chests or capes, with powers beyond human ken (and, yes, I'm considering any one who is smart enough, determined enough, and RICH enough to create/wear armor, use gadgets, vehicles, and what have you to compensate for their lack of powers to be super).

So, how do you think the world would treat them? How would you treat them? Would you treat them differently if, say, they wore no mask and their identity was public?

If it really happened I think I would be jealous that I was not one. I doubt most people would feel that way here in the states. So I think the world would go after them, but I am a pessimist. If there were gods involved (Thor) or aliens (Green Lantern), then I think the world would act differently, more hesitantly and more humbly. But not otherwise.

Humans? They'd be hunted and people would attempt to capture them out of jealousy, greed, or even a misplaced desire to do good from synthesizing their powers.

Gods? There would probably be two camps; those who revere and respect them, and those who reject them and attempt to destroy them.

Short response I'm afraid, but I'm at work and technically shouldn't even be here. :p

I think the responses are largely the same whether or not the superpowered individual was a god. Even if a guy comes down and says he's Thor, or Zeus, or Amon-Ra, the camp will be split between those who believe, and those who would tear them down. Same thing if a guy called himself Superman; I'm sure people will worship him as if he's the sun god, while others would demonize him.

Personally, aside from the potential threat superpowered beings pose (imagine a WMD with FEELINGS) for the most part they'll be treated the same as celebrities: paparazzi will follow their every move, people will hack into their phones, or camp outside their homes if they reveal their identities. It's a little safer if they kept their masks on, but it'd be hard to hide in a world with twitter.

I'd still keep my mask on, though, if ever I had powers and decided to be a hero. The stress on privacy for my family would be brutal.

If you had powers would you ever use it for personal gain? Even for something mundane as making your commute shorter to-and-from work, or making your work easier by sneakily using telekinesis or super speed.

Anyone who says they wouldn't use their powers for personal gain is a liar. Even the most benevolent person would (unless you're like, a monk or something rare like that).

If I could make my life that much easier through superpowers you bet your ass I would. I don't think superheroes would be well-recieved, though. Not sure what else I would do with superpowers though, I have to think on it more.

I often think about which power I'd like most, and it tends to come down to shapeshifting, time-travel or teleportation (but decent teleportation, none of that Nightcrawler shite).

For me it is shapeshifting, no doubt. But ugh, time travel, hmmmmm. Can that be a superpower?

I'm sure it can! I think of the three individual powers I'd like to have (as opposed to ALL of them like Superman -_-) it would be super speed, healing factor, or telekinesis. I'd have said telepathy, but that's kind of like a whole can of worms. If ever there was one power someone can TRULY abuse it'd probably be that @_@

Yeah, that would be easy to abuse. Telekinesis would be a good power. Not so into super speed, but I agree about any kind of healing factor superpower.

I think super speed and telekinesis would both be very practical. Regarding super speed its applications are very far reaching, unlike flight, for an example. Working in the bakery would be a breeze with super speed, so much so I'd probably put people out of work! And, in the comics a lot of super speedsters already have the ability to heal very fast, to consume (and temporarily retain) and utilize a vast amount of information quickly. Issues will arise from the physics of it all, of course: I can imagine super speedsters can be very destructive if they're not careful with their power.

Isn't there also an issue of burning to death from friction? Didn't that happen to a superhero in a movie once?

Yeah, possible. Don't remember ever seeing that. For the sake of conversation, let's just assume one's own powers won't directly cause one's death upon use, though! haha

I'm sure it was a movie, or a comic, or something...I do remember it from somewhere.

I've often considered the practicalities of teleportation; I suppose you'd need some kind of all-seeing eye ability to go with it, or you could teleport into a wall. I think that puts me off the idea a bit, as I'm sure I'd ruin my psyche with that.

...come to think of it, limitless time travel would probably ruin my psyche too.

...wait, fuck, shapeshifting would probably ruin my psyche as well...

    FUCK!

You're fucked Skully whichever way you look! So don't look!

In Buffy there was an episode where the person danced so fast they burst into flames and died. Also I have heard that about friction elsewhere but I forget where.

Seriously, I am not so into going fast, but going careful...like a "luck" ability. That would be very useful.

I'd take super healing, for myself and the ability to share. I think I've played one too many healers, lol.

Yeah fuck it, I'll take a healing factor, there's no downsides to that one...which I can see right now anyway.

Well, there was one story in a comic where another superspeedster 'stole' another speedster's protection against friction mid-run and they turned into ash.

Healing/regeneration seems the most practical in the end, I agree. You'll recover from nearly any wound almost instantly, possibly even regenerate lost limbs, greatly delay the effects of aging, the effects of fatigue, etc. Pretty useful stuff.

Only problem I can see is potentially healing around something bad, like healing around a sword stuck through you, or maybe healing the flesh part of a compound fracture before the bone is set. But those would also be easier to fix.
